How to Layer Instruments in FL Studio
Learn how to stack multiple VSTs and samples in FL Studio to create thick, professional sounds using the Layer tool and Channel Rack.
Layering helps you create complex, unique sounds by triggering multiple instruments simultaneously from a single MIDI pattern. This guide shows you how to use the Layer channel to stack your synthesizers and samples efficiently.
Follow these steps
Add a Layer Channel
Open the Channel Rack and click the '+' icon at the bottom. Select 'Layer' from the list of available plugins to add it to your project.
Select Your Child Instruments
Select the instruments you want to stack by right-clicking the selection LEDs (the small rectangles) next to their names in the Channel Rack. Ensure the Layer channel itself is the active selection.
Assign Children to Layer
Open the Layer channel settings window. Click the 'Set children' button to link the selected instruments to the Layer controller.
Sequence the Layer
Enter notes into the Piano Roll of the Layer channel. These MIDI notes will now trigger every child instrument you assigned in the previous step simultaneously.
Common mistakes
- Layering too many instruments with overlapping frequencies, causing a muddy sound.
- Forgetting to assign the Layer channel to its own Mixer track for processing.
